Hi all......

In the sullen days of winter just past the holidays we have time at last to breathe and get back to the creativity of what we love to do. December is so crazy with party hair and everyone rushing to look their best for parties and visits to family. Now that it's a new year it's time to get back to our roots and get crafty with our style!

New photo shoots coming, a trunk show of designers selling their goods at our shop, and free styling at our up coming art shows! We are also putting together an early spring fashion show for 2012. I am just feeling so juicy about bright color and wigs.

I took the pics above at a very special event in New York at the house of Bumble. Edo was the salon chosen from San Francisco to attend! We were thrilled and excited as they gave us inspiring underground fashion shows, business classes with a harvard professor, and endless bouts of amazing food, drink, and of course hair.

Heather Dean, one of Edo's most beloved assistants has finally graced the floor with her presence.

After a year of perfecting challenging bobs, difficult pixie's and men's barbering she is now ready to rock as a stylist.

Heather graduated from the San Francisco Institute of Esthetics & Cosmetology and is passionate about funky short haircuts, sassy bobs and trendy layers.

We are so proud that she has powered through a year of specializing in cutting through our assistant program. Congrats Heather! It won't be too long before you become a color queen.

Tasha Loudon!

This local lady's gallery is based out of the Upper Haight where she's been creating original works of art for individuals, designers and companies for over 10 years. Her art ranges from nurseries and kid’s rooms to model homes and restaurants.

Tasha and her team of artists also specialize in creating murals, custom paintings, and decorative designs for all types of projects. She has painted for Hollywood’s most discerning elite, but approaches all ranges of projects with the same enthusiasm and professionalism.

While custom painted kids rooms are her specialty, Tasha's art, murals and decorative painting works have also been featured on television, in magazines and in local shows. While she calls San Francisco her home base, she has clients all the way from L.A. to New York that commission her.

We are so happy to have some of her amazing creations hanging on our walls and a funky little Christmas tree to display in front. She even painted a mural of machine guns to frame our shampoo bowls!

AWESOME!

The tree raised some concern but what can we say? We love being at least a LITTLE racy....

Season changes call for salon changes.

The art work this Fall for our Edo gallery is the wonderful work of Kelly Nicolaisen!

Kelly is a local of the Lower Haight district and has shown her pieces in many Lower Haight business including Bean There, D-Structure and the Lower Haters gallery.

Her inspirations derive from her love of music, color, space and design with everything that fits in her little world that she imagines!

Edo Salon & gallery welcomes our new Art Curator Jennifer Allen!

We are thrilled to have this creative gal as not only our main receptionists but our wonderful new art curator.

"I gather inspiration for my own crafting and art adventures every day from the texture on the side walk to the way the wind blows through trees. I grew up in a very boring cookie-cutter place so I was always taking trips to the neighboring major cities to get some creativity in my life! I started exploring art through performance being very interested in dance and theater as well as singing in a choir."

With her first paycheck at age 15, Jenn bought her first real set of paint brushes. Growing up in a clean and always tidy house, she was stoked to finally have a chance to get a little messy!

Wanting to be in a more creative and dynamic city, she moved from Orange County California to the ever-so-loved and artsy Portland Oregon. It's there where she found herself at home being surrounded by so many friends in art school and felt that she was in a city that was not full of art but was art all on it's own.

"I am highly influenced by urban art and creating something beautiful from something that was once looked at as ugly and boring. Art that I respect and love is honestly art that I can look at and say " there is no way I would have thought of that and no way I could recreate that"

Not only is urban art, sculpture and interior design a passion and creative outlet for her but at one point Jenn even considered being a hair stylist.

" I always thought I wanted to do hair and I still find hair styling one of the best forms of art. It not only looks beautiful but it can change the way someone feels about them selves."

Our staff is excited to get a fresh, new perspective for our gallery and we can't wait for what's in store!

Congrats to the two new hair goddesses! After years of apprenticing at Edo and a zillion perfect graduated bobs, pixie cuts, long layers, and all color combo's one could think of... these two ladies officially are full fledged stylists.

In the adorable pics above are models from Jamey and Nichole's final show. We had cake, balloons, dancing, and a Janis Joplin sing-along to celebrate.

The sweetest part is that both of these ladies started at Edo answering the phones. Jamey had made a carreer of running salons in L.A. and downtown S.F. Nichole worked at Edo for 5 years as our head receptionist and gallery curator before deciding to get her hands in some hair herself.

We are so proud of them and all their hard work. Call now to have either of them work some magic on you!

to Oribe or not to Oribe?

So, Chri and I spent the end of the 90's and all of the 00's working in New York with Bumble and Bumble. A main reason for this was we had a very close and personal realtionship with our darling teacher Tom Gallagher. He is like a fairy in the best of ways. He taught us to feel the hair and organically cut with our eyes almost shut. It became intuitive.

Last year Tom moved to a new company after 16 years with Bumble. Oribe was created by the original founders of Bumble's product line. There is a different feel to it. I would say more London less Brooklyn. It is wild in a sleek way. Almost a new wave way... more sexy less beautiful.

What to do? Our loyality with Bumble runs 12 years deep... but the addition of a sleek sexy new line coupled with our favorite teacher/mentor of all time is mighty tempting.

Today in our little meeting room one of the favorite Edo stylists Kristina came to me and said she had fallen in love.. with the Oribe styling products. They are classy, sleek, add texture, shine, and effortless movement. All that with an edge.

Fun hair from the salon

The salon has been so busy lately! We have been doing these amazing little classes teaching people how to style their own hair. The above picture is a beautiful modern version of a classic french twist. It was done in the Edo basement lounge by Becky on clothing designer Rachel Znerold for an event.

The second picture is my own little creation. This young girl came in for a bang trim. She was kind of a post modern, arty, punk type girl and wanted something interesting. I gave her the Liza Minnelli of the 1980's movie Cabaret. The haircut she wears in that movie was my inspiration for becoming a stylist and is very near and dear to my heart.

spring at last

Hi all!

Things are really exciting at Edo right now. Spring is here and we are starting to get involved in all types of events. Stay tuned for styling out and about while dancing to old soul records, photo shoots inspired by 1976, and lots of new pixie cuts for spring.

I think Chri and I go back and forth on our all time favorite era for hair. It's between french mid 60's, london early 60's, and american 70's disco hair. Big, sexy, glossy, with brushed out waves... so amazing.

In the mean time, our salon manager Zoe Brock has been modeling about town again. Here is a clip from a fashion show we were involved in. She is the first model to walk and quite obviously the most beautiful. Enjoy!

Ahhhhh, short hair. It is just so clean and simple. It will showcase any original features on your face. When done well, this can be a good thing! I think a prominent nose, large teeth, or extra pointy cheekbones can be an asset when you wear them with confidence and embrace the unique that makes you... you.

All three of the haircuts above were done in house at Edo. All three were complete make overs. All three women were afraid to cut their hair. The results... beautiful.

You may recognize Marjory from the top picture. She was discovered a couple weeks after getting this new look and ended up a finalist on America's next top model. Taking a chance on a whole new look can do wonderers.

let your curls be wild....

I am so excited for fall and the coming winter season. More and more our curly headed ladies are embracing the "fuzzy" in their hair! I seriously have big, sexy, curl envy. It is actually very easy to achieve on both tight ringlets and limp fine curls. It is all about not washing more then once a week (rinse only), getting a carved into, organic razor cut, and then piling on the surf spray and curl cream. Upside down diffuse and ..... adorable. The wilder the better. Looks best when done before a roll in the hay. ;)

1940's hair rolls

Chri and I were just back in New York for another workshop with Bumble and Bumble. At this point we have been working with them about 3 times a year. Every time we go I take a good hard look at what the stylish city girls are up to. I get so much inspiration from that city. It seems they like cleaner lines. Simple yet arty hair.

The looks I remember from the early 90's are back in full swing there. It's a 40's hair revival with a classier take on the grunge look on their feet. Think clean quaffed up-dos with military boots. I kind of love it.

So, the way to get this look it easy. You need shoulder length hair to start. Let it get 2 days dirty or more. Flip your head upside down and squeeze a large quarter size pile of Bumble gel in your hand. Rub your hands together and run it through your hair roots to ends. Now brush it into a side pony tail right above your ear. Roll the pony up and pin the interior of the roll with bobbies. Now..... spray it well and you look amazing!

Here comes the sun

OK already. This summer in San Francisco has been just plain sad. Today I was so gloomy I resorted to looking at pictures and planning my beach vacation out of here. I hope you all are able to get in a car, cross any bridge, and get the hell out of here and into the sunshine.

We all love the beach and beach hair as well. Every company out there has been selling salt water in a bottle to ladies of the city that want to look like sexy, tousled surfers. In the summer, the wilder the hair the better.

To achieve the right kind of beach hair is easy but not without a bit of effort. First, a good cut in in order. I like the contrast of messy, lived in, layers with a blunt edge. I say either wispy ends with a strong bang or blunt chopped length with a soft feathery bang.

How to use the surf spray is easy. Just wash and towel dry, flip your head and squirt about 10 sprays into the roots and mid section of your hair. Next, use a nice hair cream to layer on top and create that tousled look in shiny pieces and not matted clumps. I love Bumble's Brilliantine for this. Just a small amount the size of a pea. Now, for a more dramatic effect use a hair dryer and blow the roots dry. The surf spray will expand with the heat causing major amounts of body in the crown. You can even go further and tease the roots. The last step is to gently scrunch the hair slowly in sections and flip your head back up. Give it a small shake and twist some of the damp bits around your face. Fix the bangs with your fingers and then let it be for one hour.

stop washing your long hair every day!!!!!

The other day I had an adorable client in the salon that was really sad about having to wash her hair everyday to keep the oils in control. She swore if she let her hair go one extra day it would be limp and start to separate in greasy little strands across her forehead. Yuck. I realized that she didn't know about the tricks to control and even play with the oils long hair provides us. I assume many others might not know either.

So, here are a few tips and rules for taming the grease, building body, and having fun at last with the locks you love.

#1 ONLY shampoo at the roots of your hair. Use a shampoo that is appropriate for your hair type and massage it well into the scalp. We are not wanting to rub our fragile long strands when they are wet. This causes dryness and breakage. The scalp needs the massage for blood flow to keep it healthy and to discourage oil blockage in the follicles. Don't worry! Your hair will get clean of all dirt when you rinse the shampoo out.

#2 ONLY condition on the middle and ends of your hair. Grab a ponytail in your hands and condition that. Whatever you do, never put conditioner on your scalp unless you are at the salon. Your head produces enough natural oils as it is to treat the new healthy hairs near the scalp. Conditioner and treatments are for your dry and damaged ends that don't ever get the benefit of natural oils touching them.

#3 The hair market is swarming with "dry shampoos" otherwise known as hair powder. Let me just say... this stuff literally changed my relationship to my hair. At Edo we use the Bumble version of hair powder. It comes in a spray. You just lift up sections of your 1 or 2 day oily hair, hold the can 8 inches away, and spray it onto the roots. I do this in about 5 sections all over the top and sides of my head. I use the clear (white) color because it vanishes into the hair. Next, take your fingers and massage or brush it into the roots like a shampoo. Your hair will now be not only free of oils but much more matte in its finish and it will have a ton of body.

#4 Here is the best part. Now that your hair is a little bit dirty with a matte finish it has lost all of its slip. It can be molded and teased so easily! Just a couple of bobbie pins and your hair will go up into the adorable messy up-do you always wanted. I promise you will be surprised at how easy it is. Make a half up french twist, a big sexy pony tail, or a loose low bun. We want you to play with your hair. This is also great for pulling those bangs you have been growing out up into a low pomp. Just give it a try....

Magical hair color

Oh my God. When I came across these pictures I literally got light headed. Color makes such an emotional impact! As San Francisco hairstylists most of us have done some serious experiments with color on our own hair. We take it to the limit, bleach it out, and take it back again. I myself can say with total honesty that I have had every color hair in the rainbow at one point in my life. Cotton candy peachy pink has always been my favorite on fair skin. In the past year, to our delight, fashionable women have been asking for more subtle and almost ethereal colors. We can create this feel with watercolor looking hair painting techniques. It's the same old punky colors of the 80's diluted down and mixed together to create an almost vintage and romantic feel. These photos really take it there.

I feel everyone has a peachy or turquoise side to them just waiting to show itself. Be brave... hair color is an adventure!

We love braids

If I could define the style of San Francisco and even more so define the style of our own San Francisco hair studio I would have to say "bohemian". This style just never dies around here. Being from Santa Cruz, I have had some sort of gypsy bohemian thing running through my veins from day one. Edo as a collective seems to have the same thing going on. We keep attracting these talented, crafty, free spirited, artists to work with us year after year. Our 1960's culture is strong. The clients know that even with the most straight forward and blunt cut ever there will always be a bohemian signature even if it is subtle.

What could be more bohemian then a braid? Fish tail, side french, double french, corn row, inverted... you name it. Make a braid, loosen it up, let it be fuzzy and wild, and then pair it with a sweetly tailored dress. Amazing.

Braids work wonders to dress down an evening gown or for a simple morning of yoga. They have the 70's, romance, hippie thing when paired with a prairie dress and clogs. They have the mid 80's new wave thing when worn with a black and white striped jazzercise body suit, pumps, and red shiny lips. A braid can also say high fashion when worn with a simple black dress from opening ceremony. It is all about messy woven hair with a sexy well fitted outfit.

There are a couple good ways to start when braiding your own hair. Start with dirty hair. Flip your head and apply Bumble hair powder to the roots and brush through. This will make your hair more matte and less slippery. Now take a comb or brush with a rat tail end and make a part where you would like it. Try a crooked part for a less severe look. If you know how to french braid try it inside out. If your hair is long try a ponytail and then a fish tail braid. I you have medium length hair and have no clue how to do fancy braids, just do two braids with uneven amounts of hair in each hand. Secure the ends of your braids with a clear hair band. Now, try using bobby pins and pinning your braids up until you have a fun little woven hair style! Make sure to criss cross the pins to secure that they won't slip. Take some of the strands and pull them a bit loose. Let it be a little work of art! Now that you look amazing, spray the entire thing with classic hold hair spray and put on some fabulous eye shadow. You are good to go.

So, as I mentioned before this is finally, finally the year for the fashion forward ladies of S.F. to cut their hair short! This is been beyond exciting for us at the salon.

Listen, I have been working as a stylist in this city for 17 years straight now. This long, hippie hair situation that has been non-stop for the past 8 years has to wrap up at some point. I have been looking for actual wearable styles to share with you all that are cropped and boyish, but also sexy and unique. The euro chic models and Parisian 20 somethings are doing it so Hollywood cannot be far behind.

I am sure many of you think your hair is too thick for a short style. We have heard it a million times.... the last time you tried cutting your hair off was 10 years ago and you looked like a soccer mom right? Or it was so short it made you look way too butch and you felt like you had to pile on lipstick to get even a second look? Or did it just take way, way too long to finally look decent and land in a ponytail holder with out that horrifying headband?

Well, fear not people. Listen, first thing, hair is the one and only thing you can do to your own body to make a total change over night (other then a huge tattoo or some such... ) Also, we have amazing tools and techniques we have been learning to master and can make almost any hair take a feminine and interesting shape. It is all in the little details we leave to showcase your face shape. We are stylists! That is why you pay us the big bucks. We know how to flatter a face shape with all our little scissor and razor tricks. Not to mention these days we have soft supple hair creams and potions to dip your finger tips in and play with the little pieces we leave behind that make your new style so uniquely.... you.

hairspray works wonders.....

I thought I would have a little chat about an oldie but goodie called hairspray. If i was on a desert island and could have only one styling product for my fine, limp hair, I would without a question choose hairspray.

Here is the deal. Long hair looks great teased and worn pulled up with a few bobby pins. Without hairspray to finish it off it will slip and fall out or get a soft and unflattering frizzy halo. For the best bed head up-do, first let the hair get one or two days dirty, then softly tease hair at the crown, twist and pin always criss crossing bobbies to stay in place, then finish with a medium hold spray like bumble spray de mode.

Here are some sweet photos of hair with have done using hairspray. The first one is our amazing colorist Hadley. She is doing a little champaign for us in the pink. Hadley has stick straight hair in her everyday life. The rest of the photos are from two different fashion shows the Edo art team work on. One was for The vintage store Pretty Penny and the other for boutique Minnie Wilde. I love the tousled, big, sexy looks created here.

If you are gun shy about sticky hair, try a soft and brushable hairspray to build body and starch in your hair. I couldn't really live without it.

my favorite redhead is now crooning

In every life of a hairstylist we eventually pick out our favorite redhead of all time. For Edo, hands down, the choice is super model Karen Elson. We really first noticed her when we became familiar with Bumble and Bumble. It was about 1991 and Edo had yet to get to New York at start working with them. There was all this buzz about a new haircut called the "botched bob" that this haunting beauty was sporting. The original Bumble hair genius Raymond took out his barber straight razor and literally whacked this fawn of a woman's hair at the chin. Overnight, she and the haircut became a sensation. In 1998 I was lucky enough to actually sneak into one of Raymond's crazy classes before he went awol and vanished without a trace from the hair world.

On tuesday when I heard the beauty would be crooning her little dark heart out at Cafe Du Nord here in S.F. I simply could not miss a chance to see the red locks glow in person. It turns out the lady can actually carry a tune. Ethereal and romantic with a country twang at it's best. Not a surprise since she married Jack White. And, a smart move sice we can't stay young forever. All in all, it was a big room of fashion eye candy and got me thinking about red again.

The best way to know what shade of red is for you is one simple rule, if you have pale and clear skin go with the cooler red. A hint of auburn or chestnut. A subtle cinnamon glow. A peachy strawberry blond.

With freckles and golden skin, do a golden based warmer red. A coppery honey. Muted tangerine with hints of golden sparkles.

We think every woman should try a perfectly tailored shade of red at least once in her life.... it is all about skin tone and balance.

hair soaks up oil beautifully

Our lovely manager Zoe just sent me this you tube link. I literally almost cried for the 50th time since this god awful oil crisis began. The BP gulf spill has now passed up the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska as the worst man made environmental disaster of all time. The bodies of Dolphins are washing up on the shore and thousands a fisherman and their families have been placed in financial ruin. BP just received a bill for the "clean up" efforts from the U.S. for 1.6 billion dollars. Guess what? this equals to ONE day of earnings for this monster company. One day of earnings. That is all this crisis has cost them.

Anyway, as a small business owner and a lover of the animals, the sea, and the people, I am sick with heartache over this mess.

Now for the beautiful news..... I am filled with deep appreciation for the way my little vanity based industry can help! All your hair clippings make incredible oil clean up mats.

The seventies goddess bangs

Ok, so I know this spread of Claudia Schiffer is a few month old. Tank magazine is one of our favorite fashion magazines and I have left this older issue on our rack way past it's date due to the out of control, sexy bangs this goddess is sporting on the cover!

I love the slightly swooped center part and the painted, rooty, golden- blond, waves. This look is achieved by tossing out the old and dated way of highlighting hair with tin foil. These days we use a more seamless and natural way of streaking and making blonds seamless. Hair painting is done by whisking the color close to the root but not all the way and organically pulling much more down to the ends. It gives a water color effect like the sun would do. I always say it looks like a feather was used to paint the hair!

Sun Rays and Summer Waves

Ever since Chri and I got back from New York 2 weeks ago Edo has been wildly alive with new creative energy. Thank you to all the people reading this! My last post has inspired many brave ladies to transform their old and tired (yet pretty!) hair into short glamour bobs. hurray for change is what I say...

Another super exciting little adventure we are having is the start of an Edo art team. It's been a few years since we got out into the community and really did some fun hair just for the art of it. You will be seeing our little art team popping up all over the place to do funny movies, photo shoots, little impromptu styling sessions, and all types of local fashion shows and performance art pieces.

Our very own Becky and Henry did all this 1940's inspired hair. I could simply not believe how cute this was!

the new bob for spring

So, finally, FINALLY, the lovely ladies of San Francisco seem to be ready to change their hair!

In my 17 years of cutting hair here I have never seen a stretch so long of the same hairstyle year after year. We all loved the messy rendition of the late 60's long layers. We did! We loved them! We could wear long bangs, eyelash grazing moon bangs, we could tease the top, we could let our hair get big and sexy... we never needed a brush....

It was amazing. That said, it's over! The new decade has me getting super excited as stylish lady after stylish lady comes in and gets her hair chopped. Its a more chic, more french, more coiffed look and we are having a blast at Edo doing it!

As many of you know, we get most of our advanced training in New York where we work closely with Bumble and Bumble. In the 10 years I have been working with them this year's collection of bobs have been my favorite.

environmental disaster.....

I have been walking around the last few days with a heavy heart about the oil spill. So far it is said to be the second largest human caused environmental disaster of all time. A close second to the 1989 horrifying Exxon spill in Alaska. We all remember the pictures of wild birds covererd in black muck.
This new spill will hurt the entire food chain in the gulf for the next 20 years. Most affected at the present time are the 4 species of endangered sea turtles, the byrde whale, 9 types of beautiful and intelligent dolphins, all the plankton and other types of food for these mammals, and countless birds. All are being poisoned by this tragedy.

As the owner's of a salon we get to do our part by donating the hair clippings our lovely clients leave sitting on our floor. Your dead ends and left over styles from yesterday become mats to soak up oil.

"Getting a haircut never felt so good," a client said with a smile. "Hair naturally absorbs oil. It's amazing how well it works."

in search for the new Edo curator...

From the beginning Chri and I have felt the culture at Edo has been strong, special, and imaginative. This is due to many things... our love for each other, the incredible family of stylists, of course our loyal clients, and lastly.... our involvement in the art community.

Much of this is credit to the amazing Nichole Hagen who has put her blood, sweat and tears into the Edo gallery for the past 5 years. Working together with her chosen artists, she has curated some of the most memorable installations our neighborhood has ever seen.

To our dismay and delight, Nichole found a passion for hair while working with us at Edo. I guess sometimes good things rub off on people. We are excited to have her join our team of hair stylists. The women has talent in spades.

SO, the search for a new Edo curator is on! If any of you are interested in scouting artists, throwing interesting and multi faceted art parties, putting together a portfolio of curated installations, and making a bit of cash while you dive deep into the S.f. art scene.....

This is one of the cutest pictures I have ever seen of the outside of our little shop. I adore that we are being represented by both forms of inner city hipster transportation.

The fixie AND the skateboard. oh, wait, fixies don't have brakes.... do they?

By the way, we are throwing an art show tonight! Lovely Zoe will be making a mini documentary film of Edo while we are at it. Come sip with us!

Welcome to our Edo blog here at last. There is so much I have been wanted to share with you.

Our little salon recently won an amazing gift. We were honored to be named by Bumble & Bumble one of the 50 best salons in the country. They flew us out to New York for a week to give us a special gift.

What transpired there was beyond our wildest dreams. It was the most thoughtful and inspiring weeks of my life. Hearts were opened and the creative juices were flowing!

I am now in my room in New York thinking about why I, after 17 years, still deeply love to do what I do. All I can say is I am ridiculously excited for the upcoming year.

That is all I will say for now but I cannot leave you without an image of one of my all time favorite hair icons. Miss Brigitte Bardot. May we all learn to loosen up and let our hair down in the year to come....
